Stay Safe Online: Be Aware of Online Scams
by Micheal Hickerson
We have been recently informed that at least two ESN members have been targeted by an email scam, using their contact information from the old ESN discussion forums. Please be aware that these emails are not approved by ESN, and we have taken steps to ensure that this will not happen again.
The scam in question appears to be a “Nigerian letter scam,” an old trick which has taken on new life via email and the Internet. Click here for a Better Business Bureau alert describing these scams. The best way to protect yourself is to delete the email immediately. If you believe that you or a loved one has been a victim of such a scam, please contact the U.S. Secret Service (202.406.5572) or the equivalent agency of your country as soon as possible.
For more information about protecting yourself from online scams and other threats, please see the U.S. government’s OnGuard Online website.
