Special Opportunity from ASA

This letter is the American Scientific Affiliation to members of the Emerging Scholars Network. Click here to access the PDF version of this letter.

It is my privilege to introduce you to a thriving network of Christians in science, the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA). In my years of working with InterVarsity,
I have been impressed with the breadth and organizational effectiveness of the IVCF, especially in its ability to meet the needs of graduate students and faculty at secular universities. I believe that the ASA offers a complementary resource for those who are in the natural and social sciences, as well as for those in philosophy or history of science.

The ASA was founded in 1941 under the inspiration of Irwin Moon and the sponsorship of Will Houghton, then president of Moody Bible Institute. It is concerned with the search for truth by encouraging the study of the relationship between the facts of science and the Holy Scriptures. Although the ASA remains neutral on controversial aspects of the science/faith interface, it promotes thoughtful dialog among advocates of various ideas.

For the last five years, I have served on the executive council of the ASA, and I have been impressed with the progress of the organization during that time. Focus is shifting rapidly to electronic communication. By building a network that enables Christians to connect with each other, the ASA seeks to foster fellowship as well as to provide access to critical resources in science and faith. It publishes a quarterly peer-reviewed journal, Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith, and a bi-monthly newsletter; organizes an annual conference on science and faith; and maintains an interactive website, www.asa3.org.

Members sign a statement of faith based on the Apostles’ and the Nicene creeds. Regular membership requires a degree in science, though we interpret that broadly to also include theology, philosophy, and history with an interest and focus in science. Special student rates encourage participation before graduation.

We are pleased to announce a very special offer. Thanks to an anonymous donor, any new member application received by June 30, 2010, will receive 50% off the first-year dues. Membership includes a subscription to our journal and access to our online blogs and other material.

This is a tremendous opportunity for IVCF and ASA to work together in the field of science and Christian faith. Contact ASA Executive Director, Randy Isaac, at
for more information on the possibilities in your area. May

Blessings,
Walter L. Bradley
