Science and the Quest for Ultimate Reality
The Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences (CTNS) is pleased to announce a new program, funded by the John Templeton Foundation — Science and the Quest for Ultimate Reality: Science and Transcendence Advanced Research Series (STARS).
The goal of STARS is to provide research funding for new interdisciplinary teams of scientists and humanities scholars. Teams must be composed of at least one scientist, as well as a philosopher or theologian, and will investigate how science, in light of philosophical and religious reflection, points towards the nature, character, and meaning of ultimate reality. The research parameters will be broadly defined to avoid biasing research ideas and directions investigators may take.
STARS has two components. First, CTNS will convene a series of nearly all-expense paid conferences in January, 2007, in the Caribbean, where a current science and ultimate reality topic will be showcased. It is hoped that these conferences will help catalyze the formation of new, interdisciplinary teams.
Secondly, STARS will sponsor a competition for research grants. Twenty teams will be awarded a start-up grant of up to $20,000. Based on their results, the five best teams will then be funded with a grant of up to $100,000 to continue their research. Finally, the two winning teams will be renewed at levels up to $200,000.
