INTERVARSITY MINISTRY REPORT
InterVarsity reaches every corner of the campus
InterVarsity’s mission is to reach all of the university with the good news of Jesus. We go everywhere on campus. God is using InterVarsity to reach nursing students (1,481), graduate students (1,518), and international students (3,489), and we're even seeing work with student athletes, arts students and MBA students. In addition, there are 1,518 faculty members across the country involved with InterVarsity who honor God with their minds and in their interactions with students.
Students in sororities and fraternities are known for having a culture of partying, drinking, and hazing. But God is actively using Greek InterVarsity to transform the Greek system with the gospel. More than 2,690 sorority and fraternity members take part in student-led Bible studies, personal evangelism, prayer meetings, and discipleship through Greek InterVarsity.
In 2011hundreds of Greek students attended InterVarsity’s Greek Conferences in Charlotte and Indianapolis where they reflected on who Jesus is and how he is relevant to their lives. Sixteen fraternity and sorority members made first-time decisions to follow Jesus, and 254 students recommitted their lives to God.
Even The New York Times paid attention to these conferences with its article, “Where Raucous is the Norm, Bible Study.”Students were not only passionate about following God, but also about sharing God with their Greek brothers and sisters. During the conferences, 295 students committed to lead ministry on campus and in their houses.
Steven Dyal, a senior Alpha Tau Omega at Clemson University, was one such student. Steven joined Greek InterVarsity as a freshman and began serving as the chaplain for his fraternity.
This past year Steven’s chapter lost one of their Greek brothers in a fatal wakeboarding accident. As the students struggled to cope with this loss, several of Steven’s fraternity brothers came to him with spiritual questions, including a student named Chris who had a reputation for partying especially hard.
Chris wanted to know more about who God is and what it takes to follow him. “Hearing those words from a rager like him was the awesome work of God changing his heart,” said Steven. He and Chris began studying the Bible together. “I know that he’s serious about finding Christ because he has been sharing the gospel downtown with other brothers. And he’s doing it while he’s sober!” said Steven. “I praise God for the work he’s done and will continue to do through Chris’ life, which affects so many guys who look up to him.” (Read more stories of how God is moving in the Greek system here.)
Students like Steven are taking the gospel to all corners of the campus, and God is working. See how other universities have been affected by InterVarsity students and faculty boldly living out their faith.
