Scene description:

DVD chapter: Chapter 8

In this gut wrenching scene, the father of an Irish immigrant family plays a game of chance at a carnival to win an E.T. doll for his daughter. As he proceeds in the game, the stakes rise to the point where every penny the family owns rests on his ability to throw a tennis ball through a small hole. There are two ways you could use this clip. 1. Prayer. As he throws the last ball, his daughter asks her dead brother, Frankie, (who we presume is "watching" over them in heavean) to intervene. When the ball goes through, she makes a statement acknowledging Frankie's roll while her father believes it was all his skill. While the theology is suspect, the idea is that with the right eyes and perspective we can see God's intervention. But when focused on ourselves, we see a different picture. 2. The "slipperiness" of life. What at one point was a well intentioned fun game, quickly becomes a potentially catastrophic situation. Life is fragile. What do we do when we loose control of it? Where do we turn?
